Aloha e,
December 1941, Ah Quon and husband Bob were facing the challenge of finding a place to live on Oahu. They had been on Kauai and wanted to return. AQ was admonished by her sister and told to stay away. The housing market was tight and they had to find separate accommodations. World events would soon bring change to their situation.
Since the television premiere of our documentary: Ah Quon McElrath: The
Struggle Never Ends!, we continue to get rave reviews. The good news for those
who may have missed the broadcast, or want to view it again, is that PBS Hawai‘i
is making it available via streaming on PBS Hawai‘i Presents and YouTube.

The title of our documentary, “The Struggle Never Ends!” is proving all too true. In the the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s Hawai’i workers rose up and broke the strangle hold of an almost feudal oligarchy. This momentum carried forward and Hawai’i enacted some notable legislation, including abortion rights a year before Roe v. Wade, gender equality, expanded rights for elders and an end to the death penalty, to name a few! Ah Quon’s message, that through unity, the working class was able to win significant victories! She also knew that these victories would continue to be challenged by the bosses and ruling class and that workers and progressives could never really rest! We hope to share AQ’s story and its message with audiences on the continent via TV distribution.
Maybe more important is to use the AQ Project to reach a wide range of people and organizations in Hawai’i. We will be planning a series of live screenings and talk story sessions for students, teachers, labor, social justice organizations, and the general public in 2025. Stay tuned…
